2023 Crack Sealing begins

Contractor crews will begin applying crack seal to certain streets in Pendleton next week. NO PARKING signs will be placed along impacted streets before the work begins, and residents should find door hangars with information, including a list of what to do and not do during the work:

Do’s:

  • On your crack seal day, park your car in your driveway or out of the work area – BE SURE TO CHECK THE DATE OF THE NO PARKING SIGNS IN YOUR AREA
  • If it is your trash/recycling day, please remove your empty trash cans as soon as possible.
  • Drive slowly on roads that have been freshly crack sealed
  • The night before the work is to begin:
    • Remove all dumpsters, basketball hoops, trailers and vehicles parked on the street.
    • Turn off sprinklers for the date
  • Make sure you inform deliveries or visitors of the street work

Don’t:

  • DON’T MOVE OR REMOVE NO PARKING SIGNS
  • Do not park in the street the same day your road has been sealed. Sealant will be tender and can stick to your tires
  • Do not Turn sharply or park directly on crack sealant for the next 2 days after new seal
  • If sealant sticks to your tires. Contact CR Contracting, with your name, number, and address. Our crew foreman will contact you and can safely remove excess sealant.
  • If you do not follow the guidelines, you may damage your car & ruin the fresh sealant.

This work will require treated streets to have no parking from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

When first applied, the sealant is hot and sticky. Although the sealant will set and cure within 10 to 15 minutes, it will still be tender for up to 48 hours after application. Crews ask people to not park tires directly on top of the sealant for 48 hours.

Why crack seal?

Crack sealing prevents vegetation from growing out of and water from entering into the cracks and sub-base, which could eventually cause soft areas and base failure, forcing full reconstruction of the road prematurely. The rubberized seal prevents anything from entering the crack and reduced crack growth.Typically, alternative maintenance treatments, such as crack seals and slurry seals, should be applied to a street approximately every 7-10 years.   In Pendleton, typically crack sealing is performed in the summer, and the same streets are often treated with a slurry seal in the fall.
