Originally known as Decoration Day and originating in the years following the Civil War, Memorial Day officially become a federal holiday in 1971. This is a day to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military.
Olney Cemetery once again is home to the Avenue of Flags and have flags placed on veteran graves. These are proudly placed by VFW #92, Friends of Olney Cemetery and numerous volunteers each year.
Volunteers placed flags on veteran graves on Wednesday evening. The flags will stay in place through next week after Memorial Day.
Thank you to the volunteers who placed the flags, to the staff who maintains our cemetery and to the many men and women who have served our country.
