After 28 years at the Pendleton library, Mary Finney who always dreamed of becoming a librarian retired as the Library Director of the Pendleton Library on Thursday, January 31.
Mary studied library science at Emporia State College in Kansas. After earning her library degree, she applied for and landed a job working in the Pendleton library, which was then located at what is now knows as the Arts Center.
Mary worked very hard to earn her position as director, working under the mentorship of past directors and growing in the position as changes took place. Changes such as moving from the old library into the new library located inside City Hall, a technology which changed the way people found books as the card catalog disappeared and changed the way people read books when electronic readers came into play.
Her love of having fun with sounds will be missed, as she enjoyed being expressive with her voice to excite children (adults too!) during story time, hoping to enrich their love of reading and books.
Congratulations Mary and we wish you all the best in your retirement!
